Clear cube, warm clinker
A family home in Münsterland shows how modern architecture and traditional materials can create a cosy setting for indoor and outdoor living.
At first glance: a monolithic brick block – that opens up
When you think of brick, you often picture gabled houses with pitched roofs. This detached house near Billerbeck in Münsterland breaks with the cliché: a sculptural, two-storey cube with a flat roof, completely clad in a lively mix of Wittmund clinker bricks. Red, brown, graphite, subtle shades of grey and sand – in daylight, the colours change subtly, lending warmth and depth to the austere form.
The clear volumes are not merely a matter of form. Recesses create covered outdoor spaces: a deep loggia spanning the width of the house on the upper floor and a sheltered terrace area on the ground floor. In this way, the architecture grows naturally into the garden.
The project thrives on the material. Wittmunder Klinker Mix 198-132 displays a wide colour spectrum; each photo tells a different story: sometimes cool grey and blue hues dominate, sometimes warm red veins or dark burn marks. The narrow, medium-grey joints bind the mix without smoothing it out. Up close, irregularities in the craftsmanship become apparent – partial edge breaks, nuanced surfaces, clouds of colour – precisely those details that make industrially manufactured minimalism human.
